Gorongosa: A New Hope in Wild Africa 1x58

Jackson Wild Media – Winner of Special Jury Prize 2019

Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique has become one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife restoration stories. After a decade of renewed protection, Gorongosa’s large mammal population has increased 10-fold, to over 100,000 animals. But it is the work that the Gorongosa Project is doing outside the park, in the local communities, that is perhaps the most important aspect of this story. The Gorongosa team is trying to reframe and redefine the identity and purpose of this beautiful park in central Mozambique. By bringing large-scale, long-term health care, agriculture support, and girls’ education to surrounding communities, Gorongosa is becoming a new model for other Protected Areas in Africa. In doing so, they hope the park will survive the 21st century, as Africa’s population increases from 1.2 to 4 billion people. They believe that empowering women and educating girls are the keys to lifting local communities out of poverty, thereby easing human population pressure on the park.
