News War: Secrets, Sources, and Spin 2x57

In the first two hours of the News War series, FRONTLINE interviews the major players in the debates over the role of press in 2006: the controversies surrounding the use of anonymous sources in reporting and the legal jeopardy faced by reporters who refuse to name their sources under the threat of subpoena; the debate over the publication of information about secret government programs, between the journalists who think the public has a right to know and an administration and its supporters who claim national security is being jeopardized in the name of a scoop; and the conservatives, including the president and vice-president, who it has been reported believe the press is merely a special interest group incapable of reporting facts undistorted by liberal bias. FRONTLINE examines both the challenges faced by journalists and casts a critical eye on how journalists have responded to those challenges
