Azorian: The Raising of the K-129 1x104, 2x52

Known inaccurately to the general public as “Project Jennifer,” Azorian was the CIA’s audacious attempt to recover the wreck of the Soviet ballistic missile submarine “K-129”, by a specially designed and purpose-built salvage vessel, the “Hughes Glomar Explorer”. From its loss in March 1968 until the summer of 1974 the Soviet’s were ignorant of the US Navy’s successful mission to locate and photograph the wreck, and that the CIA was preparing the largest salvage attempt in history in Project Azorian. At the height of the Cold War K-129 offered the US a cornucopia of unique intelligence targets, ranging from an all-important opportunity to study Soviet nuclear weapons technology, to the chance to break into Soviet cryptographic systems. This massive effort was one of the longest and most expensive covert operations in CIA history.
