Mont Blanc is one of the most magnetic mountain vistas in the world—no other mountain range has such a long record of mountaineering and glaciology. But the two hundred years of winter sports, science, and tourism, have done nothing to tame this mountain. The forces at work here, the hazards generated by rockfall, ice avalanches, and sudden flooding are still largely impervious to human intervention. On Europe’s Mont Blanc, a team of daring ‘glacionauts’ descends into a labyrinth of unexplored ice caves to find trapped flood water that menaces the populated valleys below.
