Lost in Detention 1x53

Get-tough immigration enforcement strategies initiated by Bush and continued by Obama have, in the last five years, doubled the number of immigrant detentions and deportations to nearly 400,000 per year. The Obama administration has promised to reform the system: to make it more humane and more selective, targeting for removal only those most serious criminal immigrants. Some critics argue the government isn’t being tough enough. Others say the vast detention system and rigid application of the laws continue to subject many individuals, including legal permanent residents, to harsh and excessive treatment. FRONTLINE correspondent Maria Hinojosa journeys deep into the secretive world of immigrant detention, with a penetrating look at who is being detained and what is happening to them.
