Shakers: Hands to Work, Hearts to God 1x60

A vivid and bittersweet portrait of the 200-year old history of the Shakers, whose influence was far out of proportion to the numbers of its members. The film is a beautifully crafted combination of rare archive material, interviews with three of the twelve remaining Shakers, testimony from their contemporaries, and film of their settlements (furniture, architecture, inventions, and craft), overlaid with original recordings of their music — all part of the celibate discipline they called “Authentic Christianity”.
